Common motorcycle terminology explained.

Engine Terms

  • CC: Cubic centimeters, engine displacement
  • Bore: Diameter of the cylinder
  • Stroke: Distance piston travels
  • Compression Ratio: Ratio of cylinder volumes
  • HP: Horsepower, engine power output
  • Torque: Rotational force, measured in Nm or lb-ft
  • RPM: Revolutions Per Minute, engine speed

Chassis Terms

  • Wheelbase: Distance between wheel centers
  • Rake: Fork angle from vertical
  • Trail: Distance from steering axis to ground contact
  • Seat Height: Distance from ground to seat
  • Ground Clearance: Distance from ground to lowest point
  • Wet Weight: Weight with fluids and fuel
  • Dry Weight: Weight without fluids

Performance Terms

  • 0-60 mph: Acceleration time
  • Top Speed: Maximum speed
  • Fuel Economy: MPG or L/100km
  • Power-to-Weight: Horsepower per unit weight

Suspension Terms

  • Travel: Suspension movement range
  • Fork: Front suspension assembly
  • Shock/Monoshock: Rear suspension
  • Preload: Initial spring compression
  • Damping: Resistance to movement

Braking Terms

  • Disc Brake: Most common braking system
  • Drum Brake: Older braking design
  • ABS: Anti-lock Braking System
  • Caliper: Holds brake pads
